This is the most exciting time to be alive

If we were purchasing virtual vacations a la Total Recall, right now would be a highly desirable trip.

One of the most depressing things I learned in school was that everywhere has been mapped, there is no uncharted territory. For the first time since that moment, life feels different.  Things could go either way, we could be at the brink of an apocalyptic crash or at a convergence and reaffirmation of humanity.

Don’t get me wrong, I realize that humanity is detrimental to our planet and our success comes at the cost of other species and a degraded environment. But I want to survive. I want to make the best of a challenging situation.

When faced with such great uncertainty we must make the conscious decision to ‘live on your knees or die on your feet’. I celebrate and fear humanity.

Right now people may have to deal with fear in a way that they are not prepared to. When we are struggling on the bottom rung of the Hierarchy of Needs, we are in tough shape. People may break social contracts and act in ways which were previously unacceptable. While it is important to be compassionate, it is also prudent to do so cautiously.

Humans are a social species, so much that solitary confinement is one of its worst punishments. Being stuck in quarantine can be especially challenging for some folks. How do we survive this highly stressful moment where people may be in fight or flight mode and where the illusion of scarcity has hardened people? How do we trust and work together?

How do we reduce our risk of exposure?  In BJJ we are taught to aim for two arms distance as a safe zone, now days that is still within some people’s sneeze radius and the recommended distance between strangers should be 6 feet.

How much can we prepare for? One of the gifts of this challenge is time to research, to read and to learn. There is a chance that this pandemic can force some much needed social change. Whether good or bad, there will be change.

I want to encourage people to take an active role in their own survival and that of their loved ones and if you have the capacity, of members of your community. This is a chance to step in front of the fear and control your narrative. Remember that this is the most exciting time to be alive.
